This was a beautiful rug that came into our cleaning plant the other week, a nice example of a Turkish hand- knotted rug.

Images 1 and 2 clearly shows extensive fringe damge, where the fringe is actually falling apart. The most common reason why this happens is simply where the rug has been placed on the floor. By the look of this one it was placed in a high traffic area, where it was walked on constantly. All it takes is one thread to break and the whole fringe quickly becomes damaged.

Image 3 is showing the vibrant colours used in this rug. We treat most rugs with the view that colours will run when they come in contact with moisture, and sometimes colours can migrate without any water. Although most colours run, in this one i would expect the major problem to be the red dye. As it maybe unstable, you could see it migrate into the other clours. In our cleaning process we do stablise the dyes,but sometimes dyes will run what ever precautions we take. Our tests take 24 hours to complete, to see if dyes will migrate.

Image 4 is showing the back of the rug and its tag. These tags have information on them reference where it was woven.
The tag on this rug was starting to cause problems as the staples used to attach it were going rusty. As a rug owner you must look out for things like this as the rust will cause damage to the fibres.

Image 5, if you look closely, shows us a white cotton thread poking out.
This is caused during the weaving process and is found in all hand knotted rugs. dont worry, keep an eye on them, and ask for some advice if you are worried about the condition of the rug.
